Lead Organisation: Create CIC

Town Deal grant value: £473,785.00

Celebrating our makers and creatives, CREATE Contemporary Crafts Hub provides community craft facilities for the people of the town and beyond and is establishing a centre of excellence in glass and ceramic design.

In December 2022, thanks to funding from Camborne Town Deal, Create CIC completed the purchase of the Donald Thomas Centre, an iconic grade 2* listed Greek Revival building in the centre of Camborne. In July 2023, thanks to match funding from the ERDF through Community Led Local Development, a new creative co-working space, community crafts library, and exhibition space opened.

The aims of the project are to:

  • Inspire creativity in all
  • Engage communities in creativity
  • Ensure everyone has access to high quality equipment, teaching and workshops

It will also contribute to:

  • Creating a safer Camborne, tackling and managing antisocial behaviour by giving opportunities to young people and fostering a pride in their town
  • Enhancing education opportunities by partnering with education partners and filling existing skills and equipment gaps
  • Enabling higher quality employment opportunities by offering apprenticeships, training and skills in high quality multidisciplinary creative space

The project will raise the profile of Camborne as a place to visit and stay by attracting and running nationally recognised specialist talks, courses and masterclasses.

Local regeneration and growth will be supported by bringing a disused building back to life and establishing a vibrant creative hub in the town centre, working in partnership with an established creative industries Community Interest Company.

What happens next?

The second phase of the renovation started in October 2023 with the construction of a new fully equipped and accessible pottery expected to be completed by April 2024.
