Saturday 7th September 2024 sees the much-anticipated opening of the new pottery at CREATE Contemporary Crafts Hub in the centre of Camborne.
From 3-6pm, Create CIC will be opening their doors and welcoming the local community to their new, fully accessible ceramics studio.
The studio will be fully equipped with different sized kilns, a slab roller, glaze room with spray booth, extruders and wheels, as well as a plaster room for mould making that allows users to explore slip casting. It will also have a large teaching area and spaces for users to work on their own projects.
Jane Smith, founding director of Create CIC, educator, and artist working in ceramics and glass said: “It’s a joy to be able to encourage our local community’s creativity, whilst keeping craft skills alive, and making it accessible to all is a priority.”
The studio and equipment were funded through Camborne Town Deal – one of ten projects aimed at revitalising the town centre and giving the community new opportunities and aspirations.
A fundraiser has been organised to coincide with the opening and all CIC members, course participants, friends, and workshop attendees are being asked to donate a handmade mug. These mugs will sit alongside those donated by professional local and national artists – including Kate Malone MBE, Catherine Mountford, Simon Kneebone, Julia Crimmen, Jacqueline Clark, Andy Mason, Linda Styles, Charlotte Jones, Richard Phethean and Linda Bloomfield.
A fundraising draw will take place at 5pm on Saturday 7th September. To ensure everyone has an equal chance of receiving any of the mugs on display, each is being assigned a random number between one and a hundred. Tickets cost a minimum donation of £20 and the goal is to raise £2000 to fund after school pottery classes for local children.
Val Dalley, Chair of Camborne Town Deal Board, said: “The Contemporary Crafts Hub is a fantastic facility for Camborne, and the Create CIC team has worked really hard to make the courses accessible to everyone.
“The transformation they have achieved at the Donald Thomas Centre is amazing and, on behalf of the Town Deal Board, I wish them continued ongoing success.”
Tickets for the mug fundraising draw can be purchased in person or on www.createcic.co.uk
