Camborne LifeCycle

Significant progress is being made on delivering this scheme which, when complete, will provide 3.7km of enhanced walking and cycling routes with the aim of connecting key sites and encouraging pedestrians and cycle usage, cutting down on car journeys and improving air quality in and around the town centre.

The scheme covers 8 separate locations with a variety of measures to enhance walking and cycling provision from the town centre, along the former Roskear tramway with connections to Park Gerry and the Red River Trail.

Roskear route :

Construction of the works at the first location at Rosewarne Road were completed in January. These included widening the existing footway on the east side of the road and installing a dropped crossing point with tactile paving to improve accessibility between Rosewarne car park and the centre of the town. A new streetlight was also installed as part of the scheme.

Work is now continuing at other locations which includes sections of the Roskear Tramway and North Roskear Road.

Tramway wall – following concerns over the condition of a section of the supporting wall on the Tramway, an assessment was carried out which concluded that without immediate repairs there was a significant likelihood that the Tramway may need to be closed to users. To avoid this taking place, members of the Town Deal Board agreed to allocate funding to carry out the repairs.  The structure of this section of the wall has been a problem for some considerable time and the decision of the Board to meet the costs of the repairs has been welcomed by the local community.

Work to repair the affected section began on 18 February and is being carried out by Cormac.

It has also been agreed to provide an additional £500,000 to enable further improvements to be carried out on the Tramway and surrounding network.

This follows a report into the escalating costs of remediating complex mining related infrastructure at Treverno park on Boilerworks Road.  This report identified a £500,000 shortfall in the funding needed to carry out the remediation works that would allow a new footway to be constructed. Despite extensive efforts by Cornwall Council and the Town Deal transport project team, it has not been possible to identify any additional funding at this time.

As a result, the Board has endorsed a recommendation to remove the Treverno  scheme from the Town Deal programme and redistribute the £500,000 budget to support additional works on the wider Roskear route.

The details of how this will be allocated are still being considered but are likely to include further surfacing and drainage improvements to the Roskear Tramway, carrying out further works to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists and providing additional signage and street furniture.

Cornwall Council would continue to explore other funding options for the Treverno scheme beyond Town Deal.

The overall Camborne LifeCycle programme remains on schedule, with the first tranche of the construction works due to be completed before summer 2025 and the second portion of works to be delivered by early 2026.

Camborne Renew

This scheme is designed to enhance the appearance of Camborne town centre, improve access for pedestrians and cyclists, and increase the amount of time people spend in the town and support the local economy.

Following the completion of detailed designs for the scheme, the plans were published for formal consultation at the end of January.  These included proposals to improve the environmental aspect of the town centre by adding more seating and plant greenery, improved pedestrian crossings, extending on-street parking at the top of Trelowarren Street to 1 hour and enhanced lighting and CCTV.  There were also proposals to enhance the character of adjoining streets to complement the overall scheme.

The consultation has now closed and the project team are currently reviewing the feedback from the local community.

A report setting out the results of the consultation, with recommendations on the way forward for the scheme, will be considered by members of the Camborne Town Deal Board.

Subject to the results of the consultation, it is anticipated that construction will begin in the summer 2025.
