Camborne Rugby Football Club are celebrating good news after being awarded £40,000 to renew their grandstand roof by Camborne Town Deal.

The decision, approved by the Town Deal Board at a meeting last week, will allow work to commence on the Renovating the Recreation Ground project in the coming months.

The project, one of nine included in the Town Deal investment bid for £25m for Camborne, has been allocated an early release of funds by the Board.

Cherry & Whites Chairman Andy Gill, said: ‘’We are delighted and hugely grateful to have this funding confirmed. On behalf of Camborne RFC, I would like to thank the members of the Town Deal Board.

‘’The funds will allow us to complete an important element of the ‘Renovating the Recreation Ground’ project ahead of the 2021/22 season commencing and provides a real boost as sport looks to resume and recover following the prolonged period of inactivity under Covid 19 restrictions’.”

The rugby ground is a beloved community location for Camborne people of all ages. This early release of funds means that Camborne Rugby Club can continue to improve their facilities and widen participation, which is exactly the kind of healthy and prosperous outcome the Town Deal Board was looking to achieve when it put together its Town Investment Plan.”

The Government selected 101 towns throughout the UK and invited them to apply for a possible £25m each of regeneration funds from their Towns Fund. Camborne is just one of four selected in Cornwall – the others being Truro, Penzance and St Ives.

A board comprising volunteers from both the public and private sectors was formed to consider and develop the bid.

After months of deliberations and consultation with the public, an investment plan was submitted in January 2021 with a shortlist of nine projects.
